Sounding it Out with Casey Lewis & Stacey Pickering (Lakewood)

Casey Lewis @caseylynnlewis & Stacey Pickering @we_are_vibrational_energy have been co-creating Sound Bath + Reiki offerings together for quite some time, as well as engaging in their own vocal sounding practices individually & in small groups. Both regularly experience supportive, transformative healing through their explorations with vocalizing - humming, toning, groaning, growling!, or whatever arises. As their collaborative Sound + Reiki offerings have evolved, they feel guided to not only share their vibrational support with folks for the time that we are gathered, but to help (re)connect participants with the medicine that those of us with breath & voice carry within and can almost always access.

Sounding it Out is about empowering ourselves to remember & reclaim our voices to support our own healing & liberation. In this practice we slow down, listen within, and notice what is asking for attention. We will bring care to the parts of us that need it through breath & vocalization (whatever arises! - maybe even a simple song / chant invitation). This can be done sitting, lying down, moving as needed, and even silently, in stillness, if desired.

Then, we'll release the practice & nestle in with blankets and bolsters to receive the restorative vibrations of crystal & Tibetan singing bowls, bells, chimes, gong, shruti box, rain stick, guda drum, & voice, and group hands-off (& possibly, optionally 1:1 hands-on) nurturing Reiki.

We'll take some time to process silently, with the option of journaling or artistic expression - bring supplies if you desire! -
then close our gathering, with an invitation to share.

Of course, vocal sounding is optional, as are all parts of these gatherings. Silence can surely be medicine too. But if there is something in us that fears being heard, perhaps a supportive container of nonjudgement is the perfect place to lean in with curiosity & compassion, and explore what happens when we give ourselves permission to have a voice.

Murmurations Yoga and Book Club w. Tanya Reynolds - Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski Ph.D.

October 4th - Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski

If this is a topic that interests you, join us for discussion – no reading required.

We’ll arrive together with a slow asana practice and then share snacks and conversation.

For much of the 20th and 21st centuries, women’s sexuality was an uncharted territory in science, studied far less frequently—and far less seriously—than its male counterpart.

That is, until Emily Nagoski’s Come As You Are, which used groundbreaking science and research to prove that the most important factor in creating and sustaining a sex life filled with confidence and joy is not what the parts are or how they’re organized but how you feel about them. In the years since the book’s initial publication, countless women have learned through Nagoski’s accessible and informative guide that things like stress, mood, trust, and body image are not peripheral factors in a woman’s sexual wellbeing; they are central to it—and that even if you don’t always feel like it, you are already sexually whole by just being yourself. This revised and updated edition continues that mission with new information and advanced research, demystifying and decoding the science of sex so that everyone can create a better sex life and discover more pleasure than you ever thought possible.

As always, expect a slow and mostly restorative asana practice before we share snacks and discussion of the book.

Sacred Season Yoga: Autumn Edition with Caressa Joyce (Lakewood)

This is the time of year when we can mentally and emotionally de-clutter:  take stock of what we have, what we want to keep, and be grateful for, as well as what we want to clear out and compost, as we prepare for the end of this season and the end of the year.

In this season of mid-Autumn as we circle together, you can look forward to:

Yoga practices that center and balance our bodies

Breathing techniques that connect us to the Earth and Wind elements

Meditations that support this time of slowing down and deeply listening

Last month, we chanted a mantra for finding light in the darkness, and this month we will chant for the wisdom that a devoted practice of all 8 limbs of yoga brings.  I offer enough guidance that a beginner can easily participate. Your choice to join in or listen - either way, you benefit from the vibration of the mantra!

This workshop is a unique opportunity to expand your understanding of these sacred practices where you are encouraged to ask questions, experiment, and explore your edge.

As a Licensed Massage Therapist, Reiki Master, Yoga Teacher Trainer, and Leader of Sacred Circles, Caressa is honored, humbled and grateful to share this ancient wisdom with you.

Gogyohka: Five Line Poems of the Heart and Breath w. Timmy G (Larchmere)

Big forest Utakai returns to Abide this September!  The season begins to cool a bit, and the sun slants a little lower in the trees with their old leaves preparing to fall.  What is falling away from you, what acorns are ripening and getting ready to be planted?  Many rush this time of year as school begins, but the best school is the school of gathering together to wonder, to play, and to express.  We will gather like a school of silvery fish reflecting all the rays of the past summer off our shimmery hearts in a great gathering of poetry! All are welcome—please come and find the masterpieces living in your heart.

***

No experience reading or writing is required. Please bring paper and a pen or pencil with you. This is not a poetry workshop. No critical evaluation of your poetry will take place.  A heart cannot be questioned, only encouraged.

Light meal, good times, an embodiment practice, writing gogyohka, and optional sharing. Gogyohka Uta-Kai is super fun!

Early Autumn Sacred Seasons Yoga w. Caressa Joyce (Lakewood)

Early Autumn Sacred Seasons Yoga

Mother Nature has built heat all throughout this summer season and now, at the transition into autumn, when leaves begin to change into bright orange, yellow, and red flames, we witness the beauty of transformation.

Enjoy the passion of the season with these practices I have lovingly and mindfully curated for us to sink into.

In this season of transition we will circle together for heart and throat opening Yin yoga and breathing practices that soothe the nervous system. This is also the season of ragweed, so we’ll practice massage that nourishes the lymphatic system.

Building on last month’s gathering and our communal vocalization, this month we will layer on more mantra. I provide enough guidance that a beginner can easily participate.

This is a unique opportunity to expand your understanding of these sacred practices where you are encouraged to ask questions, experiment, and explore your edge.

September 6th - What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia by Elizabeth Catte

If this is a topic that interests you, join us for discussion – no reading required.

We’ll arrive together with a slow asana practice and then share snacks and conversation.

In 2016, headlines declared Appalachia ground zero for America's forgotten tribe of white working class voters. Journalists flocked to the region to extract sympathetic profiles of families devastated by poverty, abandoned by establishment politics, and eager to consume cheap campaign promises. What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia is a frank assessment of America's recent fascination with the people and problems of the region. The book analyzes trends in contemporary writing on Appalachia, presents a brief history of Appalachia with an eye toward unpacking Appalachian stereotypes, and provides examples of writing, art, and policy created by Appalachians as opposed to for Appalachians. The book offers a must-needed insider's perspective on the region.

Chill Fight Club w. Nikki Rodney & Hope Hamling

The first rule of Chill Fight Club? WE TALK ABOUT CHILL FIGHT CLUB.

If the very thought of conflict has you shrinking, perhaps it's time to befriend your fight response? So many of us (especially those of us socialized as women and girls) are afraid to embrace the power and beauty of this energy. Without fight response, nothing changes. Without fight response, we don't hold our own boundaries. When we don't honor the force of this animal urge, we are doing ourselves and our communitites a disservice.

Embodying primal energy, we'll emulate monkeys and move around in animal ways whilst praticing conflict in a safe and nonviolent setting. This practice, led by Nikki Rodney and Hope Hamling, is inspired by Fighting Monkey, a movement practice designed by Josef Frucek and Linda Kapetanea, is based on the idea that we must learn how to be adaptable in our movements so that we can handle whatever uncertainty might come our way with boldness and ease.

Expect a fairly physical practice that can be adapated for many different levels of mobility. While the word "fight" is present here, this is actually a super PLAYFUL practice, guaranteed to light you right up.

August 2nd - Before We Were Trans by Dr. Kit Heyam

We’ll arrive together with a slow asana practice and then share snacks and conversation.

Today’s narratives about trans people tend to feature individuals with stable gender identities that fit neatly into the categories of male or female. Those stories, while important, fail to account for the complex realities of many trans people’s lives.

Before We Were Transilluminates the stories of people across the globe, from antiquity to the present, whose experiencesof gender havedefiedbinary categories. Blendinghistorical analysiswith sharp cultural criticism, trans historian and activist Kit Heyam offers a new, radically inclusivetrans history, chronicling expressions of trans experience that are often overlooked, like gender-nonconforming fashion and wartime stage performance. Before We Were Transtransports usfrom Renaissance Venice toseventeenth-centuryAngola, from Edo Japan toearly America, and looksto the past to uncover new horizons forpossible trans futures.

Summer Solstice in the Great Meadow w. Hope & Stacey

Fifteen and a half hours of continuous daylight, Summer Solstice is on its way! A couple of years ago, Stacey and I gathered together in the Great Meadow in Forest Hill Park along with about 30 people, to greet the turning of the season. We watched the wind blow through the tops of the trees, the curious young deer wander nearby, the sun slowly descend down into the lake. We spread out blankets and sheets and laid down in the tall grass together. Fireflies and flowers and all of us breathing, moving, and resting together. It was a magical evening I won't soon forget, and I'm excited to enjoy more time honoring the change.

Join us for an evening of qigong, yin yoga, meditation, a sound bath, and rest. Let's soak in the beauty of nature in this season, and prepare for the harvest ahead.

~ Yoga, that is therapeutic, somatic, trauma-informed, fluid, and meditative, and in alignment with the season.

~ Chanting mantra and vocal toning, which gives voice to our emotions and prayers.

~ Self healing through massage and reiki.

Sounding it Out w. Stacey Pickering & Casey Lewis (Lakewood)

Sounding it Out w. Stacey Pickering & Casey Lewis (Lakewood)

Casey Lewis & Stacey Pickering have been co-creating Sound Bath + Reiki offerings together for quite some time, as well as engaging in their own vocal sounding practices individually & in small groups.

In this practice we:

  • Slow down, tune in, & listen within

  • Notice what is asking for attention

  • Optionally: Bring care to the parts of us that need it through breath & vocalization (humming, toning, sighing, groaning, or whatever arises! - maybe even a simple song / chant invitation). This can be done sitting, lying down, moving as needed, and even silently, in stillness, if desired.

  • Release practicing & nestle in to receive the restorative vibrations of crystal & Tibetan singing bowls, bells, chimes, gong, shruti box, rain stick, guda drum, & voice, and group hands-off (& possibly, optionally 1:1 hands-on) nurturing Reiki

  • A bit of time to process silently, with the option of journaling or artistic expression - bring supplies if you desire!

  • Close our gathering together, with an invitation to share (a word, a breath, a presence)

Murmuration Yoga & Book Club - Mirrors in the Earth by Asia Suler (Larchmere)

June 7th - Mirrors in the Earth by Asia Suler

If this is a topic that interests you, join us for discussion – no reading required.

We’ll arrive together with a slow asana practice and then share snacks and conversation.

For June's Murmurations book club, we are setting ourselves up for a summer of outdoor AND internal exploration!

When we are feeling especially depleted and hopeless, we often wrap ourselves in the narrative that actions of an individual can't affect a systemic problem. There is power and autonomy in self-healing, and the more we look inward, the more we begin to see reflections of our goodness and intuition in ourselves and in the natural world.

In Mirrors in the Earth, Asia Suler shares 12 meditative essays on nature and healing, with accompanying recommendations and exercise prompts included with each. From the manatee-calm springs of wild Florida to the flower-dotted coves of the world’s most biodiverse mountains, Mirrors in the Earth is an invitation and encounter with the benevolence of the living world--and a nature therapy session for the soul.

As always, expect a slow and mostly restorative asana practice before we share snacks and discussion of the book.

Cost: $15 - $25 sliding scale

Time: Friday 6-8 p.m.

Gogyohka: Five Line Poems of the Heart and Breath w. Tim Geaghan

Big Forest Uta-kai (poetry party) returns to Larchmere Abide in May!

The form of poetry we will write, Gogyohka, celebrates the freedom in being a little off kilter, in surprising the pen with what the human experience has to offer.  What’s more liberating than not knowing what will come next, what will come out of you, what moments and thoughts and feelings that have been stored for how many seasons and suddenly sprout onto paper?

Let’s refresh our hearts with little songs that could be wishes, could be reminders, could be anything, as long as the lines come from you. This is the time of possibility—a time to return to a poetic practice or start a new one. Join us as we come back together for the beautiful communal making we call Uta-kai!
